Homer P.R.I.D.E. Established

In the past, many activities in Homer were sponsored by HIWAY, (Homers Involvement With Adults and Youth). They started the first Holiday Café, sponsored the Easter activities, Holiday Tour of Homes, Hoops, after school programs, and many, many other activities and events.
The community really was very fortunate to have such a great organization. HIWAY is now known as Homer PRIDE (People Responsible for Improving and Developing Economic Growth). The new group wants to do many of the same things, a few new things, and add a new focus on our downtown area and local businesses.
Our downtown needed some immediate and small improvements, which really improved the first impression we gave visitors as they enter our town. The first order of business was the garden at the Emporium. This community garden was overgrown with weeds, and really needed a good trimming. So we all pitched in, and I bet you saw immediate results this summer! New mulch was added as well, and the garden became a gem again.
The flower barrels were re-planted by Gaylene Kunzie, and many people helped keep them watered.
Most volunteers won't let you take their picture, especially after they have worked tirelessly in the hot sun....unless you lie to them.....So, here is a picture of Ray and Connie Newman, after working really hard one day on the garden. Believe me, they worked a lot more than one day, and they had a lot of help too....but this is the only picture I was able to get. I'll just have to be quicker next time.
